Here is a transformative miracle! The paralytic of Bethesda. John 5:1-9:
1 After this there was a festival of the Jews; and JESUS went up to Jerusalem.
2 Now in Jerusalem, near the sheep gate, there is a pool, called in Hebrew Bethesda, which has five porches.
3 In these lay a great multitude of sick people, blind, lame and withered [waiting for the movement of the water.]
4 [For an angel went down at a certain time into the pool, and stirred the water; so the first one who went down there, after the movement of the water, was cured of whatever illness he had.]
5 There was a man there who had been sick for thirty-eight years.
6 JESUS, seeing him lying down and knowing that he had been lying like that for a long time, asked him: Do you want to be well?
7 The sick man said to him, LORD, I have no one who, when the water is stirred, will put me in the pool; so, as I go, another comes down before me.
8 JESUS said unto him, Arise, take up thy bed, and walk.
9 Immediately the man became well; and taking up his bed, he began to walk. Now, that day was Saturday.
This place is still very visited. Bethesda means, “house of mercy.” Some scholars say that the texts of John 5:3b and verse. 4 of the same chapter were placed later when it is mentioned about the angel who moved the waters. In verse. 7 the sick person will confirm about the angel. They are not included in the main manuscripts. John, in fact, may have told it in the form of a narrative, without, however, leaving his opinion, but he makes it clear that his focus here was hope and that it should only be placed in the Person of JESUS CHRIST. Yes, this can cure, it can bring us satisfactory results.
In services, we often observe the preacher saying: JESUS is here and people glorify it, but have you noticed that when the speaker says that the presence of an angel is there, how people scream and are completely ecstatic? Why am I saying this? What really matters here? It was a sacred site in Jewish tradition. Many sick people lay there waiting for the movement of those waters. It seems somewhat unfair. How could a paralytic compete with someone who had another type of illness that did not affect their legs? Could it be the wind moving the waters, or even an angel? Angels are ministers who work on behalf of those who go
inherit salvation, but in no way can they receive worship. The important thing is that this man had been ill for thirty-eight years. JESUS asks him, do you want to be healed? The man answered him: “SIR, I have no one who, when the water is stirred, can put me in the pool; so, as I go, another comes down before me.” JESUS in Matthew 11:28 says: “Come to me, everyone…” In the pool of Bethesda and Shiloh we can see miracles and in both it was not the waters, but the Word of JESUS, the power of His Words.
We don't even know this man's name. The Bible only says that he was a sick man who had been in that state for thirty-eight years. Woe to those who are alone! He had no one to help him. Are you like this, or, even though you have many around you, do you feel like this, alone? Jesus helped that man, HE helps you.
The paralytic was unable to do almost anything. Perhaps you are also feeling paralyzed in your spiritual, financial, family, health, etc. life. But JESUS comes to you now. See by faith HIM asking you: Do you want to be healed? Do you want to have your finances healed, transformed, family restored? Tell JESUS what you want now. That man had no one, he only had his paralysis for company. He was a loner. It could be that someone took him there and then picked him up, we don't know, however, even if that were the case, that wasn't enough, he was still alone. JESUS the best company, hallelujah!
Don't make excuses for JESUS, like that man did. Today there is an open door of great opportunity before you, enter through it. Surely, there is an unexpected blessing, right now, JESUS is there with you, enjoy it.
Get up, pick up your bed and walk! Immediately, he was healed, hallelujah!
JESUS later finds him in the temple and tells him in John 5:14:
“Afterwards JESUS found him in the temple, and said to him: Look, you are healed; sin no more, lest a worse thing happen to you.” It is not always sin that causes illness, but certainly in this man's case it was sin. JESUS says: so that nothing worse happens. The worst thing for me here, I believe, would be to lose the salvation that I acquired with my healing through faith in JESUS. Don't let sin dominate you. “Take your eyes off the “waters” and place them only on JESUS.”
